Amritpal Pal Singh and his supporters submitted evidence to the police and claimed that Lovepreet Toofan was not in Ajnala when the alleged riots took place.
By Manjeet Sehgal: Lovepreet Singh Toofan, who was arrested on February 18 by Punjab's Ajnala Police on charges of rioting and kidnapping, was discharged today after pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh and his supporters stormed the police station on Thursday.
Amritpal Pal Singh and his supporters submitted evidence to the police and claimed that Toofan was not present in Ajnala when the alleged incident took place.
Earlier this evening, Toofan was given a rousing welcome by members of the 'Waris Punjab De' after he came out of jail.
Toofan is the Gurdaspur district chief of Waris Punjab De and is a small farmer by profession. He hails from the Tibad village and is married. His wife recently gave birth to their son.
Investigations by India Today TV revealed that Toofan, before joining Amritpal Singh, used to attend farmer protests.
He was arrested by the Ajnala Police based on an FIR registered on February 16 by Singh's former aide, Barinder Singh, who hails from the state's Rupnagar district.
Lovepreet Singh Toofan, alongwith Amritpal Singh and five others besides the 20 unidentified persons, have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. All the accused allegedly kidnapped Barinder Singh from Ajnala and then beat him up. They are also accused of removing his turban and hurting his religious sentiments.
The police may have discharged Toofan for now, but the FIR is yet to be cancelled. The Punjab Police officials said that they were verifying facts and documents.
Amrit Pal Singh has sought cancellation of the FIR by claiming that it was false.
